Patrimoine d'Alsace
Villages, traditions and the memory of Alsace
Half-timbered houses, fortified hilltop villages and the festivals that still gather neighbours each season. This page follows the region's built heritage and its living customs, drawing only on documented sources.
Architecture
Half-timbered houses and fortified villages

Vernacular building
Half-timbered houses
Oak frames filled with clay and lime wash shaped the streetscapes of many villages. Their colourful façades follow construction methods that changed slowly over time.
Fortified settlements
Walls, gates and hilltop castles
Many medieval settlements kept defensive gates and towers that still mark the approach to town. Read the surviving stonework to see how communities protected their fields and markets.

Living heritage
Festivals, guilds and communal calendars
Spring vineyard gatherings, summer village fairs and winter markets mark the rhythm of the year. Many customs are kept alive by local associations and artisans who pass on their craft.
Guild traditions survive in workshops such as coopers and bakers. We separate documented practice from repeated legend, so each custom is presented with the context its records allow.
